Privacy policies of tech giants 'still not GDPR-compliant'

Pan-European consumer group BEUC have criticised companies such as Amazon, Facebook and Google, for having vague privacy policies that do not comply with GDPR. Complaint’s that consumers have been forced into new terms of service have been filed against the likes of Facebook and Instagram, in breach of the requirement that consent must be ‘freely given’.

YouTube and Facebook escape billions in copyright payouts after EU vote

EU lawmakers have voted to reject changes to copyright law, which would have made tech companies share more of their revenue with artists, press publishers and record labels. The proposed changes have been going through the EU parliament for the past two years, and will now be debated by the full European parliament in September.

Gmail messages 'read by human third parties'

Google has confirmed that consumers who have connected their accounts to third-party apps may have given human staff and third-parties permission to read their emails. According to the tech company, the practice was not against its policies and all external companies who could access emails were vetted.

Businesses to lose 'own name' defence to UK trade mark infringement

The EU's Trade Mark Directive of 2015 will now be implemented under UK trade mark laws, the government and the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) have confirmed. Businesses will no longer be able to use the ‘own name’ defence in trade mark infringement; however, this new rule will not affect individuals.

European regulators report sharp rise in complaints after GDPR

Following the introduction of GDPR on 25 May 2018, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has reported a rise in breach notifications from organisations and more data protection complaints. European countries such as Austria and France have also reported a significant rise in complaints and data breach notifications.
